A Reflection on The Solemnity of Corpus Christi
June 14th, 2009
Corpus Christi, a feast of love poured out with reckless abandon, a time to reassess what we have offered to a hungry, weary world, reaching out in desperation for an end to their emptiness. We are full, secure in a love which knows nothing of abandonment or desertion, in spite of our infidelity and ingratitude. In our moments of insight we are overwhelmed and ask with the psalmist, "What return can I make …?" The answer is clear but nevertheless humbling I must "take up the cup of salvation and continue to call on the Lord’s name." But having taken up the cup, I become aware of being surrounded by the poor and needy. Do I dare look away, I who am so filled … Again the Psalmist replies in an enigmatic and deeply challenging way, "Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful ones." Perhaps this is the key to taking up the cup of salvation for the "chosen of the Father" whose only Son gladly drained the Chalice on behalf of the "empty ones". The psalm continues "I am your servant … You have loosed my bonds. And so it is that I am sent to do likewise; that is the only true thanksgiving, the only comprehensible way of living out my vows. Hebrews clarifies this idea even further by describing how Jesus entered into the Divine Presence with His own blood. How clear it is and yet how far from my lived reality….
