Lay Dominicans

Tertiaries

Chapter of Mary Queen of Apostles

The Elmira Dominican Tertiaries or ''laity'' as they are commonly known, belong to the Chapter of Mary Queen of Apostles, one of several chapters in region 3 of the St. Joseph Province. At present there are thirty-four members in the Chapter. The four pillars of the Dominican way of life; prayer, study, (community) common life, and (apostolate) work are lived out and pursued in their daily lives. Their prayer lives are centered on the Eucharist, Liturgy of the Hours and the Rosary.

Annually a day of reflection is prepared and observed. They are devoted to the study of the Sacred Scriptures, the teachings of the Church and Dominican Spirituality. Community is witnessed in a variety of ways and include a number of Apostolates. For example:

  • Monetary and prayer support of the countywide Teen Mom Program.
  • Financial and volunteer support of the Community Kitchen.
  • First Saturday Devotion at our monastery, Mary the Queen, beginning with Mass at 7:45a.m, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, devotional prayers and Benediction.
  • Siena Circle, the Laity''s Bible sharing group which meets every other Wednesday.

On the 2nd Tuesday of each month, the Lay Dominicans pray Vespers with the nuns. the rosary is recited before the business part of their meeting. Formation of the members is led by the Religious Promoter, who at present is the Monastery''s Chaplain, Fr. Anthony Breen, O.P. The meeting is brought to a close with the singing of the Salve Regina. Refreshments are then served. The May meeting includes a brief crowning ceremony. The Feast of St. Dominic, August 8, is celebrated with the nuns in the participation of Mass followed by a luncheon. In December, in lieu of the business meeting the Laity celebrate their Christmas with a party.
